Health Care Finances 101 (aka Health Care Finances for Dummies)
Presented by: William E. Grigg, CPA, FHFMA, Chief Financial Officer, Southcoast Health System
Thursday, February 4, 9-10:30 a.m.

Just because you work in health care doesn’t mean you really understand health care finances.
In today’s complex health care world, if you’re a health care communicator, you are being called on more and more to comment on financial issues related to your hospital, complicated federal, state and private reimbursement schemes and, of course, health care reform.
This session will provide you with a working financial knowledge of one of the most complex industries in the U.S., which accounts for more than 16 percent of the U.S. economy.
Key topics to be covered include:
• Health care as a peculiar business model.
• Cost-shifting — charity v. bad debt.
• The players — employers, insurance companies, the government, suppliers, physicians, hospitals. And patients!
• How health care providers are paid — risk v. non-risk, charges v. actual.
• Cost structure for the average hospital.
• Financial health of hospitals.
• Why hospitals need a “bottom line.”
There will be ample time for questions at the end of the presentation.
